After all of our discussions about psychics last week, I was very curious as to is currently the most famous psychic? Who is the most famous of all time? After much research, the answers have been found!
Since everyone has their own opinions as to who is the "most famous", I have looked at a variety of sources and compared the results. America's most famous psychics of all time are Daniel Douglas Homes, Jeanne Dixon, and Tana Hoy (whom is still alive). The most famous "psychic" of today happens to be Paul the Octopus, who was made famous during the World Cup where he correctly predicted the outcome of all of Germany's 7 games as well as the outcome of the final match..
This past week in Ethic's Class was a very interesting final week. We covered topics ranging from our Heroic Imagination Projects, to Mr. C's last lecture. All in all, I couldn't have asked for a better final week of class!
We spent two class periods this week talking about our Heroic Imagination Projects. I thought that it was a good idea to have these classes to discuss our projects, instead of just ending the year without discussing them. I really liked my group's project idea, and I think that some other groups had some great ideas as well. My suggestions for next year, would be to start at the beginning of the year, as opposed to the end of the year like we did. Also, just for the first couple of years, I would suggest downsizing the project a bit. Instead of changing the world on the first project students have ever created, maybe try to change the community or state until more knowledge and experience is gained to impact the world. Also, I would suggest devoting some more time in class for the projects, because it is extremely difficult to organize a meeting outside if school. All in all, I think that it went pretty decently for the first time through, but I know that everyone has learned the changes that need to be made for success next year!
I just wanted to spend the last paragraph of my journal to talk about Ethic's class in general over the year. I really enjoyed being there and seeing Mr. C's bright and smiling face everyday!!! Everyday, this class really made me think and question the world around me. I learned so much that I didn't know before in this class, and I am so glad that you were my teacher Mr. C! Thank you for everything!
Last week we spent a lot of time talking about the ethics of magic and magicians. I was very interested this topic, and after seeing many magicians perform, I was curious as to who were the top magicians of all time. After much research, the answers have been found!

The list of the top three magicians varies from source to source, but after looking at the results of several polls, I have found the most common top three. Number 1 : David Copperfield. Number 2: Jonathan and Charlotte Pendragon. Number 3: Criss Angel.

Last week in Ethic's Class was a very interesting and informative week, even though we did not have many classes. We continued our discussion of magicians and magic tricks, but we also began discussing the ethics of psychics. All in all, it was a great week!

I thought that the most interesting part of the week was the documentary we watched on the ethics of psychics. I knew very little about mind reading and psychology, so this movie was very informative. I thought it was hilarious when the psychics were proven wrong! I had two favorite examples in this documentary. One was when Uri Geller was made a fool of on live television. It was even more remarkable that his career was not ruined by it! Another favorite was when the two ladies from Britain were trying to read the picture of the criminal. They were proven to be frauds because they could not even see that he was a mass murderer! I really loved how the host was able to mock the field of magic, while doing it in a comedic way that made the documentary very entertaining! All in all, it was a very entertaining documentary and it was my favorite one of the year! I am so glad that we watched it!

In class, everyone did not have a chance to speak their minds about psychics, so I will do so now. Personally, I think that all so-called psychics are frauds. I totally believe that there is no such thing as a sixth sense, and that people possessing supernatural powers is completely ridiculous! I have never seen anything to make me believe that such things are true, and until I do I will continue to deny their existence. Who knows, there maybe someone in the world that actually may have a sixth sense, but the chance of this happening is very slim to none.

III.
After all of this talk about psychics, I am very interested in learning more about psychics. Who is currently the most famous psychic? Who is the most famous of all time?

Please stay tuned for the answer next week!
After watching Outsourced last week, I was very interested in the financial state of India. How many people are unemployed, and how many live in poverty? After much research, the answers have been found!

India is estimated to hold one third of the world's poor. According to a World Bank study in 2005, 42% of India falls below the international poverty line, or over 456 million people. Despite this high number, the poverty level has actually significantly dropped from 61% in 1981.
II.
This past week in Ethic's Class, we covered a variety of topics. We first talked about illegal immigration when we watched another 30 Days video. Also later in the week, we discussed and learned about the topic and art of magic by watching a punch of little videos. All in all it was a very interesting and informative week!

The most controversial thing we talked about last week was the topic of illegal immigration. We watched the television episode where the "Minute Man" lived with the illegal immigrants. First of, how they found illegal immigrants that we willing to participate is a miracle to me. They could get deported for that, and I am pretty sure that the television show can get in huge legal trouble for knowing and not doing anything about it. Another heated issue in the class was the fact that the daughter was applying for college and for scholarships. Everyone was upset that she could do this when she was here illegally and have never paid taxes. She ended up not getting into her dream school, which I guess can be considered karma. Also I can only assume that she did not get her scholarship as well because at the end of the documentary, it states that she is attending a local community college.(not the one that she opens the letter from and I guess can not afford without the scholarship.) All in all, I guess justice was served in a round about way for the family's illegal status. Personally I do not think that they should be granted amnesty, and to teach them a lesson, they should be deported. I do however think that the government needs to make the process of gaining citizenship or a green card much easier.

Also this past week, we discussed the topic of magic, which was one of my favorite parts! Not everyone got a chance to speak about their views, so I will do so now. I personally love magic and think that it is very fascinating. I will probably never be able to do it, partially because my hand-eye coordination is not the strongest, but I admire all magicians. Some people can call them liars or frauds for a variety of reasons. True, the "magic" they do isn't really magic, but the stunts they preform are truly magical. Yes, they do deceive and lie to the public, but it is not in a bad mindset; it is only for fun! All in all, it was a great week, and I can't wait to learn and discuss more about magic!

III.
After talking a lot about magicians, I was very curious as to who are the most famous magicians in history? Who are the top 3 ?

Outsourced is an episode of a television show called 30 Days, where people are forced to live in environments for thirty days that are completely opposite from what they are accustomed to. In Outsourced, a former employee of an outsourced company lives in India with a family that does the same job as he used to. It was very interesting to see the difference in the qualities of life between the Indian and American people, even the difference between different Indian people! I had seen pictures before about the poverty in India, but I never knew that people who actually had jobs and families lived in the slums! I always thought it was the unemployed that lived there! It was a truly eye-opening experience to me as well as the people involved with the documentary.

Since I wasn’t there on Friday, I was not able to discuss the documentary that in depth. I thought I would take the time now to state my opinion on outsourcing jobs. Before watching this documentary, I was totally against it. I thought that it was extremely wrong to give jobs away to people who are overseas. I didn’t think that it was right for people to be robbed of their jobs, nor did I think that the people overseas deserved the jobs. After watching the documentary though, I partially changed my mind. After seeing the poverty and despair in other countries, I do feel that others deserve the outsourced jobs. One job in the US would be the equivalent of giving fifteen other people jobs in India. I do, however, feel that it is wrong to lay off American workers, so now I feel for both sides of the situation. I am kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place because I don’t know which side I feel for more.

I.
About a month ago, we discussed JR and his art projects. After a lot of talk, I became very curious as to what he was up to now? What is is next big idea? After much research, the answers have been found!

JR is still up to his old art styles and looks to be continuing in that direction for quite some time. One of his most recent projects was called Los Surcos de la Ciudad project or The Wrinkles of the City in English. His inspiration was based on an encounter in Cartagena, Spain, where its elderly whom were considered to be the memory or history of the city. JR took pictures of their wrinkles and marks of time and pasted them along the buildings and streets of old Cartagena. It serves as "a living memory of a city changing faster than they themselves age." This project originated in Spain, and currently has reached Shanghai, China, as part of the Biennial at The Shanghai Art Museum.
Since my past blog update, we have covered a wide range of topics in Ethic's Class. These topics range from computer programs that are designed to cure cancer to movies about children in war torn countries. All in all, it was a very interesting and informative period of time!

My favorite part of this time period was the viewing of the documentary "Promises". This is a film that is centered around Palestinian and Israeli children who are growing up in the middle of the Palestinian-Israeli land conflict. At the beginning of the movie, I thought that it was very interesting to see how strong and severe some of the children's views were. It is very sad that they were taught the need to kill others instead of compromising. It was also very interesting to see their views change over time as well, especially in the Bonus Features! As the children matured, they became less and less for compromise and peace, and more for beating the other ethnicity by any means possible. It was very apparent that they were turning into the adults that they had originally criticized!

Everyone did not get a chance to speak their views about the movie in class, so I will take the opportunity to do so now! At the beginning of the film, the twins were my favorite characters. I feel that they were the most moderate and least ingrained with false ideas. I was very shocked and upset to see that they ended up becoming the very thing that they originally never thought of becoming! They became soldiers that may have easily killed the Palestinian loves ones of their old friends! I understand their desire to help their country, but I honestly can't believe that they would turn against their friends after they swore they wouldn't!

III.
After watching the film "Promises", I am very curious as to how the children are doing now. What has happened to them after the updates in 2004?

Please stay tuned for the answer next week!
Last week I was very curious as to how the Artinians from Sound and Fury were doing today. After lots of research, an exact answer has not been found.
I have read through the Sound and Fury website, as well as many, many other sources, and a direct response to this question has not been found. I assume that the Artinians want to live their lives free from the media, so they do not publish a lot of updates. I did find one recent picture though; it is shown below. Who knows, maybe they will make another documentary again soon?
This past week in Ethic's Class was a very interesting and diverse one. At the beginning of the week, we talked about turning the world inside out through art, and the film Promises. We also spent some time talking about our HIP projects, and we had a very special guest speaker come in to talk to us about grant writing. All in all, it was a very interesting week in class!

This week we covered so much, so it is hard to choose my favorite topic! After thinking about it though, I would probably have to say that JR's TED Talk was one of my favorite activities. I had never heard of this idea before, and I thought it was really amazing! I thought it was neat to see him turn from illegal graffiti to multifunctional art! I thought that the comparison portraits of Palestinians and Israelis were very interesting and tied very well into our next topic! I can't believe that the people in the film couldn't distinguish between the two, but still hated the opposite culture! How can you hate someone if you don't even know who they are?!? I think that goes to show the ridiculousness of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict!

On Friday, the "official grant guru" came in to talk to us about writing grants. We didn't really have a chance to discuss our thoughts in class since we ran up to the bell. Before Friday, I didn't really have a good idea as to how complex grants are! I knew they were long, but I didn't know that there were extremely strict guidelines! I also didn't know that you could go to jail if you didn't fulfill your idea!!! I thought that she had a ton of valuable information, as well as many new ideas and resources that could help us with our projects.
Oh my!Journal 3-9

I.
Last week after a lot after a lot of talk about the Deaf community, I was very curious about the deaf population. I wondered how many people in this world are deaf? After much research the answer has been found!
There are over 250,000,000 deaf or hard of hearing people in the world, and there are over 16,000,000 deaf or hard of hearing people in America! That's a lot of people!

Here is an interesting graph I found!

II.
Unfortunately I was not in school last week, so I missed an entire week of Ethic's Class! (Consequently this journal entry will be in a slightly different format.) On my own though, I finished watching Sound and Fury and Sound and Fury 6 Years Later. Both of these documentaries were very informative, as well as entertaining!

After watching the last 15 minutes of Sounds and Fury, I was partially satisfied and partially angry. As mentioned in my last blog, I totally support cochlear implants. I think that they are a great resource for deaf children, and they provide unlimited opportunities in the future. I was very glad that one family decided to get their children implanted, and I was even more excited to see the results! It was truly touching to see the young boy hear for the first time! I was, however, upset that Heather was denied an implant, even though she wanted one. I could almost feel her pain as her potential future was stripped away from her! It was absolutely devastating!

After that documentary, I also watched the sequel. When I figured out that Heather received her implant, I was so excited for her! I was so happy!!! I was even more shocked when I learned that her mother also got one, even after her protest 6 years earlier. It was amazing to see Heather learn to talk and hear like a normal child! Even though her voice does sound a little strange at some points, she has progressed so much since we saw her in the last documentary! This sequel documentary clearly supports the implants and shows all of the benefits of having one. I was also happy that it made the point that implanted children easily and cohesively lived in both the deaf and hearing worlds, which was a big issue before. All in all, both of these films were by far the best documentaries that we have watched thus far!

III.
After watching both Sounds and Fury and the sequel, I am very curious as to how the Artinians are doing today?

Please stay tuned for the answer nest week!
Last week after a ton of talk about the internet, I was very curious about how many people actually use the internet. After much research, the answer has been found!

The answer to this question is a bit difficult to calculate because of the massive amounts of internet use. The general answer seems to be that just over a billion people used the Internet in 2008.
II.
This past week in Ethic's Class was very interesting, partially because Mr. C wasn't there! At the beginning of the week spent some time talking about Heroic Imagination. Later in the week, we began watching Sounds of Fury and learning about the deaf community. All in all, it was an interesting week.

I definitely thought that watching Sounds of Fury was the most interesting part of the week! I knew that there were many deaf people in this world, but I never knew how complex their world was! This movie truly enlightened me to the deaf community! I never knew that there were schools created especially for deaf children, as well as deaf housing communities. I think that it is absolutely wonderful that the US has the options available! I think that the children would benefit greatly by being around other children that deal with the same disabilities. They could learn from each other and come out better in the end! I feel that the same thing is true about the deaf housing communities. The families could be interdependent and learn a lot from one another. All in all, I am inspired by their determination and ability to overcome their adversities.

We did not really have a chance to talk about the movie this week during class. We also did not have a chance to share our opinions about whether or not we ourselves would have a Cochlear implant if we were deaf. Personally, I would definitely get one! I know that there are a lot of risks, but there are a ton of benefits! Having the gift of sound is a wonderful thing! The opportunities that open up to people who can hear are endless! I honestly do not understand why people wouldn't want to have the procedure done! People say that it would "change them". Yes,it will change them, but for the better!

III.
After a lot of talk about the Deaf community, I am very curious about the deaf population. How many people in this world are deaf?
I.
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt;"> After all of the talk last week about the “Tank Man”, I was very curious about what other people thought of the incident. What was the response of other citizens in China? After much research, the answers have been found, well sort of.

<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt;"> The general responses of people in other countries are ones of gratitude, bravery, and happiness. They are inspired by his actions and his enormous amount of courage. In China however, things are different. The Chinese government censors so much information that most of China does not even know that the event even occurred! If you Google Tienanmen Square in China, you will not find the multitude of images of "Tank Man" that you would in the United States. When interviewed, many Chinese students did not even recognize the image of "Tank Man", or they were taught to not recognize it. All in all, the true response of the Chinese people is unknown because of the oppressive strength of the Chinese government.

II.
This past week in Ethics class, we finished our discussions of the "Tank Man", discussed the power of economic growth on China, and began talking about the power of the internet. We also began discussing the technology of the future. All in all it was a very interesting and action-packed week .

My favorite part of this week was our discussion of futuristic technology. I love thinking and imagining what will happen in the future, so this was right up my alley!I think that it is amazing how greatly the world of technology has changed just in my life time! I remember using cassette tapes to listen to music, only having 6 television channels (where only 4 really worked well), and playing board games for fun. Now we have televisions that are taller than men and more t.v. channels and shows than we could ever watch, as well as iPods, cell phones, GPS systems, and in some cases, robots to do our work for us! It is kind of scary to think about how fast our world is changing around us! So many things are evolving, and I can't even imagine how much different the world will be in 5 years, 10 years, or even 20 or 50 years!

Over the weekend, we had to watch a Frontline video about "Growing Up Online". I found this video to be very, very interesting! Before our discussions about the Internet, I never really realized how dependent I was on the Internet! I remember when my family first got the Internet, and it is amazing to look back and see the progress it has made! The first internet my family had took over 5 minutes turning on, and once it was on, it took another 5 to get to a web page! Now it takes my computer less than a few seconds! Now, our world revolves around the Internet, and we can rarely escape it! The Internet does provide us with a great and endless resource that can truly help us, but it also can be very dangerous. People can steal our identity, money, and information through viruses, as well as tear you apart on a social networking site. There have been many deaths and injuries that have been brought about through the internet as well. I honestly think that people are still trying to learn how to deal with the full magnitude of the Inernet, and until that happens, I think there will always be trouble.

III.
After all of this talk about the Internet and technology, I am very curious as to how many people actually use the Internet? I remember the Internet taking off and watching it grow, but how much has it grown?

Please stay tuned for the answer next week!
Jozef Stalin is in second place with 23 million in the USSR in 1932-39. Adolf Hitler is in third in Germany in 1939-45 with 12 million. These numbers are very staggering, as well as shocking. Most people consider the Holocaust to be the worst genocide in history, when in fact it comes nowhere close to being the worst.

Before this class, I had never heard about the story! I am very glad that we covered this, or else I may have never found out! I cannot believe the astronomical amount of bravery and courage that one man had to stand up to those tanks. I am also equally surprised that the operators of the tanks did not run him over! They only tired to go around him until “civilians came and took him away”. All in all, I think the whole situation is kind of fishy, but I truly admire his bravery. I do not know many people in this world that would be able to do that!

This week in class, we spent a lot of time talking and discussion the Rwandan genocide. We learned the background about the situation, and we also began watching The Ghosts of Rwanda. All in all it was a very interesting week!

I thought that the movie was the most interesting part of this week. I had learned about the Rwandan genocide before, and had seen Hotel Rwanda, but The Ghosts of Rwanda was totally different. It really hit me emotionally. Seeing the actual footage from the genocide was difficult. Watching a movie with actors is one thing; you can kind of tell yourself that it isn't true and didn't happen. Watching the real footage is different; you have to believe it. It honestly makes you wonder how the world let this happen! I can't really describe how I felt watching that movie; I don't think that there are words. I just remember thinking how much I didn't want to see the pain of the people, but my eyes were glued and I couldn't make myself look away. I felt that if I did, I would be letting one of the 800,000 people who died down.

One thing that we did not get a chance to talk about was our opinions on how the situation should have been handled. Personally I would have kept the UN troops in Rwanda, and probably even increased the numbers of troops to get the situation under control. I would have also tried to evacuate as many Tutsi and Hutu moderates as I could to save as many lives as possible. Also I would initiate some peace keeping/compromising actions to stabilize all political and cultural tensions. Hopefully with all of this, the situation would be resolved. If I was in charge, those are the actions that I would have taken to hopefully correct the conflict.
This week we talked about the Rwandan genocide. I am very interested now in the impact of other genocides. Which was the worst reported genocide in history?
To me, Heroic Imagination means everyday heroism. Everyone has a stereotype of what a true hero is, but when in fact anyone can be a hero. You don't have to wear a cape or have super powers to make a difference; you can do small actions that have huge effects. Heroes have to act and can not be bystanders. If people can learn and train themselves to always act, they can be a hero and make a big impact on the world!

II.
Heroic imagination and traditional leadership are different concepts, but they also have some similarities. Both involve people stepping up and being a leader, whether by example or by command. By participating in both styles, a positive difference is made on the world. Heroic imagination however is focused on the leaders behind the scenes. These leaders are everyday people that have made the choice to act and help others. In traditional leadership, normally one person is raised up on a pedestal leading others. These leaders are out in front for the world to see, unlike the heroic imagination leaders that are back in the shadows waiting to act.

III.
There are many people who embody the heroic imagination. One "well known" person is Ginger Littleton, a school board member involved in the shooting incident during a school board meeting in Florida.
She decided to stay in the room even after the gunman ordered her to leave. She swung her purse at him, in an attempt to knock the gun out of the gunman's hand. She fell to the ground, and the gunman stood over her but did not kill her. Some people think that she is just crazy and was trying to get herself killed. I feel that she was actually a hero in waiting and was extremely brave. I think she truly exemplifies heroic imagination.

There are also many other general examples of heroes in waiting. One example would be someone witnessing the stealing of a woman's purse and then chasing after the criminal. Another example would be someone helping a child that looks lost or alone and then helping them find their parents. A third example would be someone who witnesses another person falling or getting injured and then helps them, gives them first aid, and helps them to a hospital. A final example would be someone who witnesses a shoplifter in the act and then turns them in to stop them. All of these examples showcase normal everyday people who decide to act and make a positive difference in someone's life.
Last week I was very curious about the results of Bystander Experiments. I was curious as to what the statistics were? After much research, the answer has been found!
Many similar "Bystander Effect" Experiments have been conducted over history. They all received a variety of specific number results, but the trends in the numbers were similar. It has been found that
greater the number of people present, the less likely people are to help a person in distress. When an emergency situation occurs, observers are more likely to take action if there are few or no other witnesses. If someone sees a large amount of people not helping, they will be more likely to move on and assume that nothing is wrong. They pass on the blame to the others in the crowd.
This past week in class, we continued our discussion of the Bystander Effect. We studied more real life examples, as well as some more experimental results. All in all it was a very interesting and informative week!
This week, I was actually able to speak up and take action during an event instead of becoming a bystander. It sounds like a very generic event, but it actually did happen. During one of my classes, there was a group of students talking about and making fun of some other students in the same grade. They were saying how bad their new haircut looked, or how horribly they dresses, and began to make up rude nick-names for them. Even though they were not talking about me, it still hurt me. I have been bullied before in my life, and I know how awful it feels. After I heard these students say those rude comments, I stood my ground and told them to stop. I said," Stop it. You are being so rude and immature. It is horrible to talk about other people that way, so stop." Then I walked away, and I have not heard them make any comments since then. Through this experience, I have learned that it is a good thing to stand up for what is right, even if the majority is not. I am very happy that I made the decision to stand up. I know it was the right thing to do, and I am very proud of myself. I also know that the others students whom the students were teasing are very glad too.

The University of Arizona created a program called "Step Up" in order to train it's students to develop the skills to stand up for what is right. The basic goals of STEP UP! are to: raise awareness of helping behaviors, increase motivation to help, develop skills and confidence when responding to threatening behaviors, and ensure the safety and well-being of others. It also lists the Five Steps to take when making a decision: notice the event, interpret the event as a problem/emergency, assume personal responsibility, know how to help, and implement the help (Step Up!). Personally I feel that this is a great program, and JRHS could use on like it. I think it has great intentions and has the potential for success. I do feel though that all JRHS students may not appreciate the program as much as they should. I think that they might just brush it off and not pay any attention to it. I do think that it could maybe be worked into the Leadership Center, and then be expanded into the school from there. If the general public sees others following the program, then hopefully they will too! Just as the Step Up motto says, we would be true leaders and be making a difference!

III.
After witnessing a form of bullying, I am very curious as to how many people are still bullied in High School, and even Middle and Elementary as well. What is the average number? Also, how many people stand up for others, or do they just become bystanders?

Please stay tuned for the answer next week!
Last week I was very interested in the crisis in Egypt. I was wondering how everything would turn out, and if anything would be solved. As the week has past, there are new developments in Egypt!

On Friday, President Mubarak resigned from office after previously making statements that he would not. Currently Egypt's military has dissolved the country's parliament and will run the country for six months, or until elections are held. Also the military suspended the constitution and will appoint a committee to propose changes to it. Then, the public will be able to add to it and then get to vote on the amended constitution. Egypt will be undergoing some extreme changes, it's government will have some major "renovations". Only time will tell if these changes will be for the good or for the worse.

II.
This past week in Ethic's Class, we continued our discussions of the Milgram and Asch experiments, as well as the Stanford Prison Experiment. We discussed the "Bystander Effect", and it's applications on everyday life. All in all, it was a very interesting week in calss!

My favorite part of this week was learning about the Bystander Effect. I felt that it was very interesting as well as very shocking! Seeing people just walk by others who were in danger or trouble made me very uncomfortable. It made me wonder how many people would pass by me if I needed help? Would I pass by someone else if they needed help? Have I? These questions bothered me a lot. Thinking about it now, I would assume that I would definitely help out someone if I could see that they were in danger. I think that I would be more prone to help others if I could see that they were actually in some sort of medical danger, such as someone laying on the ground or bleeding. I do think that I would question taking action if a child were just having a temper tantrum. Children do that all the time, so it is hard sometimes to judge what is really going on. Hopefully in the right situation, I would take action and save someone's life.

In class we discussed the Stanford Prison Experiment, but everyone did not get a chance to talk about their views. After learning about this experiment, I have come to the conclusion that it was very very wrong. I know the experiment was to determine the impact of power and superiority on people, but I think that was lost in this experiment. The subjects became too consumed into their roles and arguably became insane. I feel that the experimenter should have stopped the experiment after witnessing this. If I were put in the experimenter's position, I am 100%sure that I would have called off the experiment, if I even started it in the first place. If I were in the experiment, I do not think that I would responded in the way that the subjects did. I feel that I could have kept myself together to remember that it is an experiment, and not real.

III.
After talking about the Bystander Effect, i am very curious as to what the statistics are behind it. In other studies, how many people passed by someone in danger? What is the average?

Please stay tuned for the answer next week!
Last week I was very interested in other people's results in "The Prisoner's Dilemma". I was curious about how others responded. After much research, I have discovered some more information, but was unfortunately unable to find a specific answer.

During my research, I found that there were over 20 different versions and variations of this experiment. Every person that completes the experiment is different and comes from a variety of backgrounds and upbringings, so they will all make different choices. If these people were actually being interrogated by police, it is human nature to fend for themselves and to not think about others. In an experiment though, people are proven to be a little more risky and daring when there are no consequences to their actions. Because of this, people do not normally work together to achieve a tie.
This week in Ethic's Class, we spent a lot of time talking about the current conflict in Egypt. Also we briefly touched on some charities and the "greater good", as well as the Milgram and Asch Experiments. All in all, it was a very informative week.

My favorite part of this week was learning about the conflict in Egypt. Before this week, I honestly had no idea as of what was going on in Egypt! I only knew that there was some anger going around but I had no idea as to how significant this issue was! I was very glad that I was able to research and learn more about it. Living in the sheltered world of the United States, it is easy sometimes to forget that there are places in the world with corrupt forms of government. We are so fortunate to live in a country where there are rules put into place to prevent severe forms of corruption that could tear the nation apart. I think it will be very interesting to see how this conflict turns out. Hopefully in the world's best interest, the Egyptian people will come to a compromise very soon!

At the very end of the week, we briefly touched on the Milgram and Asch Experiments in class. We did not get a lot of time to discuss this during class. I thought that the one word that could describe these experiments is : interesting (in both good and bad ways). I think that these experiments provided researchers with very valuable information, but I thought that the way they went about getting it was wrong. If I were in these experiments, I would want to know the real reason behind the test rather than a lie. I am kind of torn when trying to figure out if these experiments are ethical or not. I think I will have to learn more about these experiments to determine my final views.
With the current conflict in Egypt, I am very curious as to how it will all turn out. I wonder what will happen this week? Will the conflict be solved?
Last week I was very curious about the number of people who thought that cheating was ethical. I wondered if there were any surveys or statistics to prove it? After much research, the answers have been found!

According to a Washington Post survey, 64% of high school students said they cheated, and 93% of these said they were satisfied with their personal ethics and character. A Rutgers University found in a survey of 4,500 high school students that more than half of students admitted to plagiarizing materials from the internet, 74% admitted they had cheated on exams or tests, and 97 % admitted to cheating on homework. In surveying faculty, they found almost 90 percent reported being aware of cheating occurring in their classroom, but almost one-third said they did nothing about it.
II.
This week in Ethic's Class, we discussed a variety of topics surrounding the "greater good". We spent some time studying the ethics of compassion, and we saw two different view points on the subject. Also, we learned about the "Prisoner's Dilemma" and played a game to showcase how events would turn out. All in all, it was a very interesting week.

For the majority of the week, we talked about compassion. Compassion can be defined as a deep awareness of the suffering of another coupled with the wish to relieve it. We viewed two different TED talks this week discussing this, and I thought they were both very interesting. One idea that was proposed was a "Charter for Compassion". The Charter has very good intentions; it tries to achieve peace for all people and between all religions. I do feel that it is a little unrealistic. It would be very near impossible to get all people to sign it and agree to admit wrong and promise to obey the Charter. Also we talked about the evolution of compassion by watching another TED talk. Personally, I thought that this talk was very hard to absorb and understand. I do think that the views presented were different and interesting, but I agree more with the Charter than the science.

At the end of this week we also dicussed the "Prisoner's Dilemma", but we didn't really get a chance to discuss it thoroughly. I thought it was very interesting how everyone answered their questions. In real life, if I was being questioned by police, I would definitely cooperate with them, probably because I would be scared out of my mind. In the game though, I decided to stay true to my partner in crime. In the end, we actually had the highest scores out of the class! By sacrificing some points to allow both to prosper, we both ended up winning in the end. I think that this situation would not work out in real life, because when criminal's lives are in danger, they do not think of others before themselves.

III.
After talking about the "Prisoner's Dilemma" , I am very curious about the results. When it was studied, what were the results? Did people choose the same way that my group did?
II.
This past week in Ethic's class, we continued our discussion of the new face of leadership. We also started our unit with case studies about cheating and rules. All in all, it was a very interesting, as well as enlightening, week!

My favorite, and most interesting, part of the week was when we discussed the ethics of cheating. Ever since I was very young, I have had the ideas of "cheating is wrong" and "cheaters never win" permanently ingrained into my head. I still feel this way, but I was very interested to see that some people in the class did not! Some students were trying to justify it by saying that it was okay since everyone involved knew what they were getting in to. Personally, I do not feel that this is an excuse! Cheating is cheating is cheating. It does not matter whether it is a homework assignment, a quiz, a test, or exam; cheating is always wrong. It denies the leaner the chance to learn, and it mentally degrades them. It hurts the rest of the class and teacher as well. If there are any grade curves, the cheater's grades will throw them off. Also the teacher will get a false sense of how the class is doing. All in all, cheating has no benefits. It is bad for everyone!

In class, someone mentioned that cheating was justified because the people involved knew the consequences and accepted them. We did not really get a chance to fully discuss this, and everyone did not get a chance to answer. As mentioned before, I feel that cheating is very wrong and unethical. If someone knows the consequences of their actions, they would realize that it is wrong! An example of this would be murder. Murderers know that it is wrong and understand the consequences, but these facts do not make it right! Another example would be the use of enhancing steroids in sports. The athletes know the numerous amount of consequences involved in their use, but this absolutely does not make it ethical! This list could go on and on! Just because someone knows the consequences of a horrible action does not justify it.

III.
Since the ethics of cheating was a big part of last weeks class, I was wondering how many people actually think cheating is ethical? What are the statistics?

Please stay tuned for the answer next week!
Several weeks ago I was very curious about the effectiveness of commercials. Historically, the most effective commercials have been ones that are simple, straight forward, and either have a touch of humor or discuss making the world a better place. Despite the hundreds of commercials viewed everyday, a very small number actually cause consumers to buy their product.

II.
This past week in Ethic's class, we have spent a lot of time watching the mid-term documentaries and discussing the techniques used in all of them. Also we have spent time talking about a "new face of Leadership", and what we would change in the future.

Probably my favorite part of the week was watching the documentaries. I loved seeing all of the different topics and finished products. I thought it was every interesting to see the variety and similarity of the topics. I thought all of the documentaries could be divided up into two different kinds: either a tribute or informational. Within these two topics, the documentaries could be divided up between funny and serious, as well as ethical and unethical. I felt that the tributes tended to be the more ethical ones, and the funny ones tended to be more unethical. While watching the documentaries, I was actually surprised at how well made most of the documentaries were! Most of them, with a little more editing and a viewing audience, could actually be made into real documentaries. I also thought that you could see how much time and effort a group put into their documentary by viewing their finished product. There were some that the viewers could tell had been thrown together last minute, while others had taken hours upon hours creating their's. All in all, I thought that the documentaries were great learning experiences that have taught the class a lot.
Toward the end of the week, the class discussed the "new face of leadership". I thought that our in- class discussion was very interesting. I felt that it was very good to get new ideas out, because no matter how wonderful something is, it has to change over time. I thought that the class brought up many great ideas that could make the Leadership Center stronger. I do think that our discussion got a little heated when the center of attention turned towards the Leadership Council. I thought that the Council got very defensive and tried to throw down anything said after that. This was very interesting to watch. I thought some people's true characters came out that day. In my personal opinion, I feel that two major things need to be changed. One being the Council. I feel that the Council should practice better communication skills and be less seclusive. I feel that students that are not in the Council see more flaws, or areas for improvement, in the Leadership Program, and I feel that it would be best to look toward the basic Leadership population to get new ideas. Another area for improvement, which I mentioned in class, would be to give the Leadership Center "more meaning". This may sound harsh, but I by this I mean the following: to give the center more name recognition, more "meaningful" community service, and to make it more of a powerful community force that changes lives.
All in all, I feel that right now, the Leadership Center provides many opportunities to many students. I do feel though that some changes could be made to enhance the Center.
Oh my!I.
Last week I was very curious about advertising on television and billboards. How much time and money do companies spend on making advertisements? What is the average price of a commercial or billboard? After much research the answers have been found!
Depending on the market, the average cost per TV spot ranges from $13 to $63. Companies can reach 80,000 households more than 200 times for less than $10,000. These numbers vary though by television station and amount of views per station. Also the show that is playing while the commercial is being shown changes the price too, a half-minute Super Bowl television commercial costs $2.4 million! National TV spots on the final summer "Survivor" episode sold for $1 million. National TV spots on "Millionaire" sold for $750,000. National TV spots on final "Seinfeld" sold for $2 million each. Also the average billboard costs from $500.00 to $8,000.00 per month depending on the amount of traffic on the road.
Last wek in Ethic's class, we spent a lot of time talking about advertising and brands. We finished watching The Persuaders and talked about the hassels companies go through to reach consumers at home. Also we had to do a project on one of our favorite brands and do research to find out the history of that brand. All in all it was a pretty interesting week filled with lots of new interesting facts.

I really enjoyed listening to the Brand Analysis Projects this week, and it was probably my favorite part. Hearing about the unique histories of some of my favorite brands was very enlightening, as well as entertaining! All of the commercials shown were very different, but they all had one mission: to get comsumers to buy their products. Some companies used entertaining, and some slightly creepy, characters to advertise their products. Others used bright colors and flashy words to sell their products. Despite these two, other companies showed their products in use, and they tried to make them look appealing. I see all of these forms of adertising daily on television, some beign more sucessful than others. Another intersting thing I saw in some of the projects was the amount of controversy certian companies had been involved in. I think the skill and strength of a company are shown best by how fast and easily they can get out of controversy. Smaller, less powerful companies would not recover as easily as some of the larger brands like Pop-tarts and Coco-cola.

One thing that we did not really discuss in class was which style of advertising we thought was most effective. Personally, I think the companies/brands that do not bombard comsumers with outrageous amounts of commercials and billboards are more effective. Certain brands can actually get rather annoying if they can be seen everywhere one looks. Also I think commercials that are creative, but deliver a strong message are the strongest of commercials. I love seeing something new on a television commercial that I have never seen before. Also I think that the commercials that everyone can recognize have successfully won their audiences, such as the Coca-cola Santa, the Geico Lizard, and the dancing iPod users.

III.
After all of this talk about advertising, I am very curious about the response people have to commercials. Which ones historically have been the most effective? Which ones do people respond to the best?

Please stay tuned for the answers next week!
Two weeks ago, I was very curious about the Troop Greeter program and others similar to it. I was wondering how many troops have they greeted currently? What kinds of impacts are other groups making? After a lot of research, the answers have been found.

The Bangor Troop Greeters shown in the movie, The Way We Get By,have greeted over 5500 flights with more than 1,140,000 service members and 281 military dogs. Greeting all of these people, and animals too, is an amazing feat in itself and it is wonderful to know that people are willing to give up some of their time to do that. There are many other groups around the country that have similar purposes.Other groups are not as publicized, so specific numbers and information is difficult to find. Some groups simply greet the incoming and departing troops, but some actually donate American flags, cell phones, and care packages as well. All in all, these different organizations, no matter how small, make large impacts in the lives of the troops.

II.
The past two weeks in Ethic's class, we have been covering persuasive media and advertising, along with a bit on how to make a documentary and TEDx Conferences. We watched the documentary The Persuaders, which discussed the ever-changing advertising market. All in all, these past two weeks were very interesting and highly enlightening.

I found The Persuaders to be very interesting. Before viewing the movie, I had already known that advertisers spent a great deal of time and money coming up with their television and billboard ads. Despite this, I did not realize actually how much thought and research was put into simple 30 second commercials. I still can't believe that certain companies even use support groups and individual questioning to find out crazy ideas. I thought the most wacky of them all was when the researcher asked the man if eating white bread made him feel lonely! Exactly what kind of question is that? I don't think that bread companies target lonely white bread consumers! I feel that companies could save themselves a lot of time and unnecessary struggles by fine tuning their advertisements. Also I feel that they would earn more customers if they spent the money used on advertisements to lower the prices of the goods that they are trying to sell.
In class we talked a lot about the movie, but we never really answered the question of whether or not we actually pay attention to the swarm of advertisements. When watching television, I actually watch the commercials, unlike some people. I do though, however, only watch the commercials for entertainment only. Normally I do not choose to buy one product or the other just because of their advertisement. I buy things because of quality and reliability, not because of how flashy and unique their commercials are. This past spring break, my family and I traveled to New York City and stayed near Time's Square, which is known for it's over sized billboards and advertisements. Everywhere you look there is another flashing ad trying to make an impact on you. Time's Square, even though companies try to use it as a way to advertise, has actually become a tourist attraction because of the overuse of advertising. No one pays attention to what product is actually trying to be sold; they are looking to see which one would make the best Christmas card background or vacation photo. I sort of understand the advertiser's pain when it comes to advertising. Yes, having your product shown in every other commercial may work, but honestly I feel that quality and low prices are the way to go!
Last week I was really interested about the elections for the U.S. House of Representatives. I wondered who would win the 7th District? Would the Republicans regain the majority in the House? After the elections on November 2nd, the votes have been counted and the answers have been revealed!

In Virginia's 7th District, the winner was Eric Cantor who won with a 59.4% majority. He was also promoted to the Majority House Leader position in the House of Representatives after formally being the Minority House Whip. The Republican party did regain control of the House despite the Democrat's efforts to retain the majority. We will have to wait and see how this change in power turns out! For our country's sake, I hope it goes alright.
In class this week, we learned about the military, the elderly, and a group called the "Maine Troop Greeters". We learned background information and watched the movie The Way We Get By to learn more about the Greeters and their stories. All of these topics were centered around support for our troops and Veteran's Day that also occurred this week.

I really enjoyed the documentary The Way We Get By , and I am so glad that we were able to watch it. I thought that it had a really great message about love, commitment, and sacrifice. I feel that our troops are not appreciated as much as they should be. Because of this, I totally support the Greeters and think that they are doing a very honorable service for their community. The dedication of Bill, Joan, and Jerry is absolutely inspiring and makes me want to go out and greet troops with them! Hearing their stories, both the sad parts as well as the happy, really made me think about our elderly population. Seeing how lonely they can be and how isolated they are makes me feel really sad. I feel so bad for them, but I know that they enjoy what they do. Greeting the troops keeps them going and helps to bring meaning back to their lives. It is amazing what one handshake can do.

One question that was not brought up in class was whether or not we would be willing to greet troops just the Troop Greeters do. I think that I would definitely be willing to greet the returning troops and tell them how much I appreciate what they do. On the other hand, I do not think that I would be able to handle saying goodbye to the leaving troops. I don't think that I could emotionally handle it. All of the sadness in the air and knowing that some of them will not be returning would be too much for me. I think others should definitley be there to wish them off, but personally I don't think that I should be there.

III.
After all of this talk about the Troop Greeters located in Bangor Airport, I would like to know a little bit more about their impact. Currently how many troops have they greeted? Also what about other similar groups? What kind of impact are they making?

Please stay tuned for the answer next week!
Last week I was really curious as to how the elections are going in Virginia's 7th District. I had wondered who was in the lead in the election polls? Who is perceived to win? After a lot of research, the answers have been found!
According to the Washington Post's Campaign Tracker, Virginia's 7th District has historically voted Republican in both the House of Representative and Presidential elections. Incumbent Eric Cantor has consistently been re-elected since the year 2000. He has always won by at least 62.7%, and he won by 75.5% in 2004. Judging by these facts, he is expected to win in 2010. Not only does he have the historical support, but he also has the financial support. (Cantor: $1,408,116; Waugh: $21,610; Bayne: $6,805)
Last week in class, we talked about a variety of things centered around politics and political parties. At the beginning of the week, we centered our discussions around political parties and how age can affect view points. Later in the week, we watched and finished up the movie The Divided State and talked about issues concerning free speech. All in all, this week was very informative as well as interesting.
After using 2 different "Political Calculators" to determine my political party, I have mixed emotions about the results. Before taking any of the quizzes, I thought I was sort of divided between the two parties, but I thought I leaned a little more to the right than the left. My results after using "The Political Compass" sort of showed the opposite of this. It showed me being centrist, but actually leaning to the left rather than the right. The "World's Shortest Political Quiz" showed me being centrist but leaning more to the right than to the left. I find these results very interesting. I feel that the difference in the results comes from the amount and depth of the questions asked. The first quiz asked more questions than the second, so I that would lead me to believe that it would be more accurate. Despite this fact, I still think the results from the first quiz may be off because a lot of the questions were confusing, and I think my results might have reflected that.

On Friday of last week, we finished up the movie The Divided State, but we did not have a lot of time to go into great detail about our views on the movie. I think that it was important for the students of UVSC to be exposed to other viewpoints than just Conservative ones, but I don't think they should have had to pay for them. Michael Moore, despite how controversial his views are, is still entitled to his right to speak. As long as he is not harming anyone by his speaking, he is protected under the First Amendment just as everyone else is. That being said, I still do not think that the college had to pay that much money to get him to speak. They could have found someone who would have spoken for free instead, and it may have been less controversial. I still do think that there would people against the Liberal speaker, but I do not think that there would as many people against it.
Last week I was very curious about the hostages at the center of the Iran-Contra Scandal. I already knew that they went through a lot, but what was their day to day life like? What did they have to endure? What were their living conditions like? After a lot of research, the answers have been found.
The majority of the people who were taken hostage were Americans, though the rest were mainly Western European. These people were treated quite cruelly, suffering from constant beatings and mock executions. The hostages lived in "cells" and were tortured in ways that should never be mentioned. Several suffered from so much that they actually died. The victims were thrown into the trunks of cars and one captive was once transported in a refrigerator.( Galenet Biography Resource Center) As one can see, these hostages experienced more horror than any person should ever face.
Last week was a very interesting week full of politics , elections, and speakers. We watched and learned about different political campaign ads, and we discussed how they can be used to persuade audiences to vote a certain way. Also we took a closer look at the Congressional races in Virginia this fall, and we examined the different candidates' websites and campaign ads. Lastly we started our unit on The Divided State by researching some background information and beginning to watch the movie.

Out of the three main topics this week, I thought that our discussions on the political campaigns in Virginia were the most interesting. I really liked learning about things that are relevant to us and are relateable. Going into this topic, I was rooting for Eric Cantor, and after spending time in class learning more, I support him even more. He is one of the most powerful men in the House of Representatives and has been through a lot to get there. I totally respect him and wish him the best of luck in the future. When looking at the other two candidates' websites, I thought they looked very unprofessional when compared to Cantor's. I know that these two gentlemen are trying to make a difference in their community, but I just don't think that they stand a chance against Eric. I almost feel that they just got up one morning and said, "I think I will run for Congress today." I feel that because of that, they do not have the proper amount of experience required to be a great Congressman.

In class, I felt that people were very critical towards Eric Cantor. I know that everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but I feel people were just making judgments base on the fact that he has campaign money and Congressional power. I think with any election, people just make their decisions based on the television commercials and who has the best argument. If people were to actually get to know the candidates themselves, I think they would be very surprised at how they really are. I know Eric Cantor personally and know for a fact how honest, kind, and humble of a person he is. Yes he does have a secret service agent that walks around with him, but he still acts like a normal person. I feel that if the class actually got to know him like I do, they would not be so judging.
On my way to swim practice this afternoon I saw something that was very relevant to this class. I was driving by a huge Eric Cantor sign and saw Floyd Bayne himself putting up 4 small signs for himself around Eric's sign. It reittereated the point that he most likely bit off more than he could chew and is in a little over his head in this camapign. It also shows how unprepared Floyd is and how he is lacking crucial resources.

After having talked so much about politics, I just want to talk about the issue of free speech that was brought up in The Divided State. I totally support the fact that everyone has the right to speak, but I do disagree with the fact that the school was paying $40,000 for Michael Moore to come and speak. If he was coming fro free, I would totally be alright with it, but I feel that Moore was being greedy on his own part by asking for so much money from a school.
Last week I was curious as to how Oliver North, who was involved in one of the most controversial government events of all time, was able to win the Republican nomination for the Senate. How did he make it so far if he was surrounded by the dark shadows of his past? After much research, the answer has been found.
According to "The 20th Century", by David Wallechinsky, Oliver North displayed himself as an antiestablishment politician and drew a lot of support from conservative groups. He gained a lot of popularity, but many key Republicans refused to support him because of the past. Despite this fact, he still had enough popularity among the people and some other conservatives to earn the Republican nomination for the Senate.
II.
Last week in class, we talked and discussed several different interesting topics. We learned about different styles of political propaganda, such as Word Games, False Connections, Special Appeals, and Logical Fallacies, and we found examples of their use. Also we watched the rest of The Perfect Candidate and discussed several points about the movie. All in all, it was a very interesting and informative week!
When reading about the different styles of political propaganda, I actually recognized many of them. I had seen a lot of them before in election seasons, but did not know what they were called nor their formal names. Out of the 8 specific styles, I have probably seen "Name Calling" the most often. It is a tactic that politicians use a lot to make their opponents look horrible! It can always be seen on the numerous campaign commercials on the television! I personally think that this style is wrong. I don't think elections should be a time for name calling, but rather a time to find the best candidate for the people. Personally I feel that it is very childish and reminds me of something that a Kindergartner would do! Nothing is ever solved by making someone else look bad!
After doing research and watching The Perfect Candidate, I have learned more than I ever thought I would know about Oliver North. If I was able to have voted, I am not sure if I would have voted for him or not. Without doing research , I can see how easily people can be persuaded to vote against him. He had a lot of influential politicians totally against him, but he still somehow managed to get 43% of the votes. I feel if people would have actually learned more about the Iran -Contra Scandal, more people may have voted for him. I applaud the fact Oliver North's courage to try to rebuild his life after such a disaster in the past, but I think the U.S. Senate might have been to big of a jump too soon.

We did not really have a chance to discuss our personal opinions about Oliver North, so I will do that now. I think that he is an okay person who was just seriously misunderstood. Yes, maybe some of his decisions were not spot on, but he was just doing what he thought was best. If I was a hostage being held in Iran, I would have wanted Oliver North to get me out of there by any means necessary! I don't think people understand what horrible things the hostages had to go through! If they were in their position, they would want to be rescued too!
III.
After learning about Oliver North and the Iran-Contra Scandal, I am very curious about the hostages that were captured in Iran. I know that they went through a ton of horrible things, but how exactly were their living conditions? What did they have to endure?

Please stay tuned for the answer next week!
I.
Last week I was curious about the critical response to Michael Moore Hates America. I found out that it actually wasn't a very popular movie and not many people actually reviewed it. It didn't receive any outstanding awards like Bolwing for Columbine did, but it did receive an average rating of 6.2 out of 10. After seeing the title, many viewers thought the movie was going to be in a completely angry tone and were really surprised when it wasn't. One critic even commented that the movie was "just an honest attempt of a young film maker to examine Moore's controversial methods and to question his politics." All in all, the people who saw the movie responded a bit better to it than Michael Moore's movies , but it did not make a huge award-worthy impact.
This week was the end of one chapter and the beginning of another. We finished up our unit on Michael Moore Hates America and began our unit on The Perfect Candidate. We discussed our final thoughts on our "Moore Related Series" of videos, and we also briefly covered the background information in our next unit.
One topic thst raised a lot of disscussion in class is whether or not it was possible to make a 100% truthful documentary. Everyone had mixed views on this subject. I can not think of a single documentary that has been, in my opinion, completley truthful. I feel that editing can be a form of lying; it leaves out certain parts of conversations, so the audience can not see the full truth of the situation. Film makers always edit out the parts they feel would not support their topic in order to save time. This is true in a documentary too. If they never edited, movies would be months long! I know that this is very unreasonable, but I feel it is the only way to make a completley true documentary. It would litterally show everything that happened so that audiences could see the true story. Since no film maker in their right mind would ever make a movie that was months long, I feel that it is impossible to to make a documentary without lying.
One really interesting quote that we covered in class this week was said by Penn Jillette. He said, "Fearing that I'd become my enemy in the instant that I preach.." This quote really made me think. He was trying to say that he wants to get his point out, but he doesn't want to do it by stooping to his enemy's level to do so. If he sinks to his level, then he is just as bad as his enemy. This makes me wonder how many times I have actually become my enemy when I was trying to prove my point. Now that I really sit down to think about it, I totally agree with Mr. Jillette. I do feel that you shouldn't turn into the person who is doing you wrong in order to make them look bad. Two wrongs do not make a right, and sometimes it is better to be the bigger person and just let things go.
My final thoughts on this film are kind of mixed. I do think that his film was much better than Michael Moore's, but I do disagree with some parts of it. I felt he sort of became Michael Moore (his enemy) when he was trying to disprove him. He used several of the same techniques and styles but just in a different point of view. I do think that seeing both Bowling for Columbine and Michael Moore Hates America was very benificial in showing two different poits of view and how persuasive the media can be.
Towards the very end of the week, we started to cover The Perfect Candidate. I find it very interesting and fascinating that the movie takes place in Virginia. I feel that this is extremely beneficial to our class in particular because I feel that it makes it much more relatable. In some of the backgroungd information, we learned that Oliver North was involved in a lot of legal issues and national problems, but still managed to attain the Republican nomination for the Senate seat. He lost in the long run, but I am amazed that he actually made it as far as he did! I would think that all of the controversy surrounding him would have prohibited him from making it anywhere close to where he did! I feel that nowadays, he wouldn't have! I know that I am not an expert in this subject, and I do hope that I will learn more over the next week or two as we watch this documentary!

III.
As we are beginning our next topic, I am really curious about Mr. Oliver North. I would like to know a little bit more as to why he was chosen for the Republican nominee for the Senate? If there was so much controversy surrounding him, how did he make it as far as he did?
